Motherboard Overview
The motherboard is a large flat circuit board that connects and coordinates all major computer components. It houses the CPU socket, RAM slots, BIOS/UEFI chip, expansion slots, power connectors, and often integrated NIC, audio, and graphics circuits. All components communicate through the system bus.
Bus Architecture
Bus TypeDetailsBandwidth (x1 lane)
PCI32-bit shared bus at 33 MHz. Older technology.133 MB/s (total)
AGPDedicated graphics slot derived from PCI. Replaced by PCIe.N/A
PCIe Gen 1Point-to-point, full-duplex serial interface.250 MB/s
PCIe Gen 2Doubles Gen 1 throughput.500 MB/s
PCIe Gen 3Current mainstream standard for many platforms.~1 GB/s
PCIe Gen 4AMD Zen 2+ and Intel 11th Gen+.~2 GB/s
PCIe Gen 5AMD Zen 4, Intel 12th Gen+, RTX 50 series.~4 GB/s
PCIe lanes come in x1, x4, x8, and x16 sizes. More lanes = more bandwidth. GPUs typically occupy an x16 slot. Every PCIe generation is backward compatible.
Expansion Cards

๐Ÿ–ฅ Video Card (GPU)

Dedicated graphics processing with onboard VRAM and its own cooling solution. Connects via PCIe x16.

๐ŸŒ Network Card (NIC)

Wired (RJ-45) or wireless connectivity. Often integrated; discrete cards add speed or wireless capability.

๐Ÿ”Š Audio Card

Converts electrical signals to audio via a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). Supports 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound, VoIP, and MIDI.

๐Ÿ”Œ USB Expansion

Adds USB ports beyond motherboard capacity without the bandwidth limits of a USB hub.
