From the Trenches

As a cybersecurity practitioner, I’ve been keeping an eye on the latest news, and there are two stories that really caught my attention. First, N-able’s recent hotfix for N-central has revealed some disturbing information about attackers reaching managed systems and persisting. This is a stark reminder of how easily threat actors can gain access to our networks and stay hidden. It highlights the need for continuous monitoring and regular patching to prevent such breaches.

The second story that stands out is the partnership between Water Utilities Group and DEF CON offshoot for the Water Watch Center. On the surface, it may seem like a good thing - after all, who wouldn’t want to improve critical infrastructure security? But as I dig deeper, I realize that this initiative might be a Band-Aid solution at best. What’s really needed is a fundamental shift in how we approach cybersecurity for these systems, one that prioritizes proactive measures and not just reactive fixes.

In both cases, it’s clear that the cybersecurity landscape is evolving rapidly, and we need to stay on top of our game to keep up. Whether it’s patching vulnerabilities or improving our defenses, every moment counts when it comes to protecting our networks and systems from threats like these.

🔧 Patch Priority: The N-central hotfix 2 is a priority for me, given the attackers’ ability to reach managed systems and persist - this is not a trivial vulnerability that can be ignored.

Compiled daily. Stay patched, stay vigilant.
